Raphael Perez is an Israeli artist who is known for his naive paintings of urban landscapes, especially Tel Aviv. But he also has a series of abstract drawings that show a different side of his creativity and expression. These drawings are made with ink on paper, and they explore various shapes, lines, colors and textures. They are spontaneous and intuitive, reflecting his emotions and imagination.

Perez’s abstract drawings are influenced by his background as a painter and a graphic designer. He uses ink as a medium because it allows him to create fluid and dynamic forms that contrast with the rigid and geometric shapes of his paintings. He also likes the unpredictability and challenge of ink, as it does not allow him to erase or correct his mistakes. He has to accept and incorporate them into his compositions.

Perez’s abstract drawings are also inspired by his iration for other abstract artists, such as Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Joan Miró and Jackson Pollock. He studies their works and tries to learn from their techniques and styles. He also experiments with different tools and methods, such as brushes, pens, markers, stamps, stencils, spray cans and dripping. He sometimes adds collage elements or text to his drawings, creating layers of meaning and symbolism.

Perez’s abstract drawings are not meant to represent anything specific or realistic. They are expressions of his inner world and his artistic vision. They invite the viewer to interpret them in their own way, and to find their own connections and associations. They are also invitations to enjoy the beauty and diversity of abstract art, and to appreciate the creativity and freedom of the artist.

Raphael Perez, also known by the Hebrew name Rafi Peretz, was born into a traditional family and raised in Jerusalem. Her father, Shimon Perez, worked as a receptionist at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, while her mother, Alice Aliza Perez, worked as an assistant at a daycare and later took care of a baby at home. Raphael has several siblings, each pursuing different paths in life, from education to spirituality to travel.

After serving in the Israeli Army Artillery Corps, Raphael dedicated 15 years to education in therapeutic children's settings, teaching art and movement. He graduated from the Visual Arts Center in Be'er Sheva, where he studied from 1989 to 1992. Since 1999, he has made a living from the sale of his artwork and has worked in his studio in Tel Aviv since 1995.

Over the years, Raphael has explored various themes in his art, notably interpersonal relationships. His first work focused on male-female relationships, before he openly accepted his homosexuality at the age of 32. Since then, he has created idealistic paintings depicting same-sex relationships in a domestic environment, depicting scenes from everyday life with tenderness and affection.

In addition to his artistic work, Raphael also kept diaries for many years, documenting his thoughts, experiences and personal struggles. These journals have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, providing deep insight into his personal and artistic journey.
