Catching Artemida’s sacred hind was the fourth Hercules’ labour that he must accomplish on his way to obtaining immortality. The wonderful hind is swift as the wind and knows no fatigue – the demigod has spent a whole year trying to catch the mythical creature. The hero is overtaken by fury and despair, and his nature is getting inflamed with animal spirits as each day es in vain. The sculpture demonstrates the decisive moment of this long year of an endless chase when the nature of a hunter overcomes Hercules at the sight of the prey and the long-awaited victory. Lion’s mask and skin covering the hero’s shoulders blur the line between a man and an animal. The composition serves to demonstrate a lion first, while only by looking under the mask can a viewer recognize a human face distorted with fury.

My name is Anatoly Popov
I am a professional sculptor. I graduated from Pensa Artistic College in 2011 and then earned a Bachelor degree at Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 2017. Thus, I dedicated 11 years of my life to professional education.

My inspiration can be ignited by a wide variety of topics. Most of my works are dedicated to historical or mythological images and personalities, which is an eternal topic reinterpreted from generation to generation. Occasionally my soul is touched by depth of nature and wildlife, with wonderful relationships often much closer to our feelings than meets the eye. Decorative art is also of interest to me, and the fine harmony of Modern art is especially close to my heart.

I am deeply convinced that a piece of art must give aesthetic pleasure to the viewer, inspire and let him or her experience the beauty of the world independently from the selected topic.
In any work I devote much attention to its plastic component: aesthetics and dynamics of the composition, the harmony of visual rhythms. The composition lies at the core, allowing to convey the feeling and mood of sculpture. At the same time the viewer can always find a lot of details catching the eye and inviting to examine, while in some of my works decorative elements can reveal the whole story.

I wish you a pleasant viewing!
