I have always been able to draw what I can see. While in High School I started to study Architecture, which I followed into College, that slowly led me to art, and eventually painting.
I visited every art show I could find, one I never missed was the Coconut Grove Art show where I meant a number of artist, in particular, a group referred to as the Highwaymen. I lived in the Southern part of Florida, and I loved the Everglades, these Highwaymen painted Everglades Landscapes.
I read everything I could find on these men, one in particular, George Buckner, was my personal favorite. I watched him paint, the way he depicted large Gainsborough like skies, and the way he created depth, his use of color, and light and shadow. I spoke with him at every opportunity.
I was most impressed in that he was a student of Beanie Backus, an Everglades Landscape Master, and had developed his technique and style on his own. I learned all I could watching George paint, and eventually started to paint my own semi impressionist landscapes.
I used things I learned from architectural rendering classes, to create my own style, which includes oil and acrylic based mixed media works as well as charcoal black and white works.
I was most interested in the use of color and minimalistic pieces, that led me to semi abstract landscapes, which has resulted in a series of different styles, from impressionism to pure abstract works and a few others in between.
I have painted off and on since I was in college.
I started painting full time several years ago to avoid the stress and strain of “real" jobs, and with the advent of the internet, I have found galleries are not a requirement to sell art any longer. I have been working independently for over ten years, and intend to do so for the rest of my life. It"s a highly satisfying feeling to realize that work I have sold will be around many years after I am not, and hopefully can make people happy.
